Dress Code

  • Philosophical Basis, per the Student Code of Conduct

    The goal at the Brandywine School District is to create a positive learning environment in which all students are afforded the opportunity to learn in a distraction and disruption-free setting. To assist in promoting such a learning environment, the following conditions for student dress are in effect in all schools across the District. Please note that items of clothing not specifically covered in the list below can be prohibited at the discretion of the building and/or District administration.

  • Elementary

    1. Pants/slacks/capris: SOLID COLORS ONLY. No jeans/denim.
    2. Skirts/shorts/skorts/jumpers/dresses: SOLID COLORS ONLY. No jeans/denim. Jumpers must be worn with a blouse or shirt.
    3. Shirts: All shirts must have a collar.*
    4. Sweaters/sweatshirts/cardigans: Must be worn with a collared shirt underneath.
    5. No headwear is to be worn in the building during the school day. This includes, but is not limited to: hats, bandanas, scarves, earmuffs, sunglasses, or any other head coverings, including hoods.*
    6. Heavy, bulky jackets, or overcoats should be placed in lockers.
    7. The length of skirts, skorts, shorts, and dresses must be at least mid-thigh in length.
    8. All shirts must cover shoulders, chest, and midriff.
    9. Footwear that is closed toe must be worn at all times. (Flip flops and slides are not permitted. Rubber-soled shoes must be worn on PE days.)
    10. Clothing designed to be worn as undergarments may not be visible.
    11. Pants and shorts are to be worn at the waist and a belt is strongly recommended. (Pajamas are prohibited)
    12. Clothing with inappropriate, suggestive, or derogatory pictures or phrases may not be worn.
    13. Any other garments or accessories that would be a distraction to the orderly educational process are prohibited.

    Middle and High School

    1. Clothing with inappropriate, suggestive, or derogatory pictures or phrases may not be worn.
    2. Clothing designed to be worn as undergarments may not be visible.
    3. No headwear is to be worn in the building during the school day. This includes, but is not limited to: hats, bandanas, scarves, earmuffs, sunglasses, or any other head coverings, including hoods.*
    4. All shirts must cover shoulders, chest, and midriff.
    5. Heavy, bulky jackets, or overcoats should be placed in lockers.

    8. Clothing with frayed edges or visible holes is not permitted (unless there is a layer of clothing under the frayed item).
    9. Footwear must be worn at all times.
    10. Students wearing jewelry or accessories that may be considered unsafe or inappropriate to the learning environment may be subject to review by the administration.
    11. Any other garments or accessories that would be a distraction to the orderly educational process are prohibited.

    Exceptions*

    - Exceptions to the dress codes above will be made on a case-by-case basis in order to accommodate bona fide religious beliefs and special health conditions.
    - The wearing of official and approved school club and school or district organization apparel shall not be considered a violation of dress codes.
    - Building Administrators at each school shall have the discretion to designate “School Spirit Days” and other special dress days. Examples of such days include, but are not limited to, non-uniform days, jeans days, favorite jersey days, hat days, special theme days, etc.
    - Specific dress requirements may be assigned to students participating in technical labs or other classes or activities that necessitate the wearing of specific clothing in or to maintain the health and safety of students and others. These class or activity-specific dress requirements will be established by Building Administrators in conjunction with classroom teachers and will be delineated in the class, lab, or activity syllabus. Failure of a student to abide by these health and safety dress requirements may result in the student’s removal from that class, lab, or activity.

    Students in violation of the dress code policy will receive disciplinary action and will be excused from class until they are dress code compliant.
