World Languages are offered at the middle and high school level in the Brandywine School District. Students are encouraged to take a deep dive into the culture and language of foreign countries.
The Brandywine School District World Language Curriculum is based on the 2016 Delaware Recommended Framework for Designing Standards-Based and Proficiency-Focused World Language Curriculum. This curriculum prepares students to become world language speakers and readers and to take any world language proficiency exam.
Middle school students have the opportunity to explore both the French and Spanish languages. They may complete the Level 1 course by the end of eighth grade.
High school students can take several years of French and Spanish. Italian is offered at Concord High School. These classes prepare students to take an AP exam or the International Baccalaureate (IB) exam. Students who do well on a state-approved World Language Proficiency Exam, like the AP and IB exams, are eligible to receive a Certificate of Multiliteracy from the state at graduation. This verifies that the student is proficient in two or more languages.
