    Music educators in the Brandywine School District are passionate about introducing students to the rhythms and music of our world. Our lessons and curriculum reflect standards that ensure students receive an engaging and well-rounded musical education. The BSD Music Department works together as a K-12 team to ensure musical concepts and skills are offered at an appropriate age.

    Each elementary school music department offers a rich music education in which kids sing, play classroom instruments, read and write musical notation, explore movement, and more! Each elementary school has a choir program for 4th-5th grade students performing in the annual BSD Choral Festival. Our elementary schools offer other programs like Drama Club, Talent Shows, Orff Club, keyboards, recorders, and ukuleles! Several of our elementary choir programs travel to nursing homes to sing for residents. Some are invited to sing the National Anthem at the Wilmington Blue Rocks stadium.

    At the middle school level, BSD offers general music classes and the opportunity to join a performance ensemble like band choir, or orchestra. These ensembles perform concerts in the evening for a live audience 2-3 times per school year and participate in special events during the school day. Beginning in 7th grade, students can audition for All-State ensembles. Our middle school ensembles travel and perform in music competitions. Students receive performance feedback from accredited college/university professors or other professional musicians at these festivals. Our performing arts departments also present live musical theater experiences for students each year.

    In high school, students join a variety of music ensembles based on their interests and schedule availability. More advanced classes are offered in subjects like music theory and composition. Audition and adjudicated ensembles, including the Marching Band, are offered for honors credit. Students can also try out for after-school programs like musical productions. Our curriculum is a rigorous one that promotes all manner of music-making by students.  Not just “traditional ensembles” like band, choir, orchestra, etc., but other non-traditional ways of creating and making music (electronic composition, guitar, steel drums, etc.) and musical theater. These ensembles perform several times a year at school concerts and community events. Music students travel to competitions and festivals to compete on a national stage.

    BSD is thrilled to have been recognized as a Best Community for Music Education in the US by the NAMM Foundation for five consecutive years!
