Our Vision
Brandywine School District believes students from all backgrounds are able to learn high levels of math. Our math teachers intentionally plan lessons that position all students as thinkers and doers of mathematics by providing access for students to make mathematical connections, engaging students independently and collaboratively to solve problems, valuing growth over perfection, and empowering every student to think critically about the world around them.
In alignment with our vision for instruction, the curriculum materials adopted at each grade band support students in making sense of mathematics on a daily basis. They engage in hands-on instruction and small group work every day in the mathematics classroom. Students are regularly expected to explain their thinking and ask questions of their classmates and learn that mistakes can be powerful learning opportunities.
Elementary Level
The district's chosen curriculum for elementary students is Eureka Math Squared. Eureka Math Squared was created by the nonprofit Great Minds. It helps teachers deliver math instruction that provides students with a deep understanding and fluency in math. Crafted by teachers and math scholars, the curriculum carefully builds skill upon skill to ensure that students are successfully meeting the Common Core State Standards. The Zearn online platform allows students to practice their classroom math skills and receive tailored support to complete the lessons. Additionally, students will have access to DreamBox Math, an online math curriculum that offers kids games and lessons at their own pace. BSD also holds an annual district-wide DreamBox Math challenge.
Middle and High School
Each grade-level curriculum follows the Common Core State Standards for math. In addition to learning specific math content and skills, students are expected to engage in deep thinking and make sense of the mathematics being learned so that they can apply their understanding outside the classroom. Accelerated course offerings are available beginning in middle school and provide opportunities to complete Algebra 1 and/or Geometry by the end of 8th grade. At the high school level, students can take advanced courses that include AP Calculus, AP Statistics, and/or IB Diploma Programme courses (at Mt. Pleasant High School), as well as a Dual Enrollment mathematics course.
